Nepal - Katmandu & The Kingdom of Mustang

October - November  2019

Day 01: Arrive Kathmandu. Met on arrival and transfer to Hotel. Sunset visit to Bodhanath stupa. Trek briefing after dinner. (D)

02: Early morning return to Bodhanath to watch devout Buddhists circumambulate the stupa while repeating their mantras. After breakfast visit Pashupatinath Hindu temple. Fly at midday to Pokhara, flying parallel to the Himalayan peaks. On arrival transfer to Hotel. Late afternoon shooting along the shores of Phewa Lake. (B,L,D)

03: Early morning flight to Jomsom, with the flight path taking us through the world’s deepest gorge. To our left (west) is Dhaulagiri (world’s seventh tallest peak), and to our right (east) is Annapurna, tenth tallest. On arrival in Jomsom we’ll have breakfast and then spend the morning shooting locally. We’ll drive at midday to Kagbeni and check in to the Summit Lodge and have lunch. We’ll spend the afternoon photographing in this very Tibetan-feeling village, including at the local monastery. Nilgiri and other peaks loom overhead. (B,L,D)

04: Sunrise on the peaks is stunning, so we suggest getting up early and going to the lodge’s roof for that. After breakfast we’ll drive up to Muktinath (12,100’), a site sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike. Natural gas leaks through the earth’s surface here in many places, and eternal flames have been lit. Over the flames now sit several Hindu temples and Buddhist shrines. There will be many pilgrims coming to Muktinath today and every day to worship and gain religious merit, most of them from Nepal and India. This will be the focus of this morning’s photography. We’ll drive back down to the valley floor and take our lunch in Jomsom. After lunch we’ll drive an hour south to Tukche, then ascend a short distance to one of Nepal’s most stunning lodges, Lodge Thasang Village. Set on a shoulder directly opposite Annapurna and literally in the lap of Dhaulagiri, few mountain lodges anywhere can match this setting. (B,L,D)

05: We’ll have several hours this morning to photograph the local village, or for the more ambitious, take a short hike to a cave temple above the lodge. In late morning we’ll be picked up by helicopter at the lodge’s helipad and taken for a flight back to Pokhara and then on to Kathmandu to check in to our Hotel. (B,L,D)

06/07: Two full days have been set aside to photograph Kathmandu and its neighboring cities of Patan and Bhaktapur. On both days we’ll start early and spend time in late afternoon when the light is best. Midday can be for independent photography, recharging, or independent wandering. (B,D)

08: We’ll have a final morning to photograph before being transferred to the airport for your flights home. (B)
